What is hypnois? The hypnotic state is a naturally occurring phenomenon, which people may experience through their daily lives, for example, have you ever been so invoved in an activity that you completely lose track of time, or have you driven from one place to another and arrived safely, but not remembered the journey? These are both everyday examples of a naturally occurring altered state of awareness, between wakefulness and fully asleep.
Hypnosis is another example of this natural altered state of awareness. A person who is hypnotised is usually aware of what is going on around them, they will be able to respond when spoken to and cannot be forced to do anthing they do not wish to.
It is important to note that people can't be hypnotised against their will.
Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy is therapy that utilises hypnosis. It is natural and safe; there are no harmful side effects. Hypnosis can be used therapeutically because it gives greater access to the deeper subconscious part of the mind, which is important in the influence it has over our personality, beliefs, emotions and our behaviour. The subconscious works differently from our conscious mind in that it works in sensorary ways, using sounds, feelings and images.
The benefits of hypnotherapy can be long lasting and often permanent.
One valuable use of clinical hypnotherapy lies in its
usefulness in helping people cope with stress and emotional upsets which many
people experience at some time in their lives. Symptoms of such stress include
fears and anxieties, sleeplessness, irritability and outbursts of anger,
difficulty concentrating and feelings of inferiority and inadequacy. Over time
these symptoms may give rise to physical symptoms such as physical tension,
headaches, breathing difficulties, digestive problems, skin disorders and
muscular aches and pains, also underlying various habits such as smoking and
over-eating, drinking and taking unprescribed drugs. – All of these habits can
bring their own problems.
At the end of the hypnosis session the client will be gently
returned to the normal waking state. Most new clients are surprised at how far
away the reality of hypnotherapy is from any prior expectation of ‘mind
control’ and find the experience deeply relaxing.
Medical
Considerations
Some medical conditions contra-indicate the use of hypnosis
though in some cases liaison with the client’s medical practitioner may be
appropriate.
Whatever the reasons for wishing to visit, each client’s
needs are treated on an individual basis, where following an initial
consultation, desired goals and a treatment schedule will be discussed and
agreed with the client.
Although there are many problems that can be helped with the
use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, some of the more common problems can be
looked at in further detail on the ‘Hypnotherapy Uses’ page.
